Putting a plaster on the sore protects the sore but does not heal the root cause. Looking after symptoms may soothe the body, but do not treat the root cause. Treating only the symptom means the root cause is still the problem that needs to be identified and healed.

Symptoms such as bloating, constipation, heartburn, or diarrhoea tend to be symptoms of digestive issues. If only the symptom is treated, you may feel better short-term, but the digestive issue is still at large. A couple of months ago, I was chatting with a lady who told me she took something for heartburn, but the second she stopped taking it, the heartburn got much worse.

We identified the root cause, by listing all signs and symptoms. In addition, what were the contributing factors and triggers.  Finally, the heartburn is gone and there is no requirement to take anything, just to be mindful of what the causative factors were.

The root cause for ailments can be difficult to detect and may cause multiple symptoms. Let’s look at one key element of digestion, which relies on mechanical and chemical digestion. Something as small as always being in a rush and not practicing mindful eating can lead to a low cephalic phase digestive response. This is critical for healthy digestion. This step is when all your senses, taste, smell, sight, sound are activated in advance of eating. Up to 40% of digestion may occur during this process. This response increase saliva in your mouth, which is your enzyme secretion to help break down food. Furthermore, the brain then sends a signal to stimulate the HCL in your stomach to help with the excretion of waste and absorption of nutrients.

The key to resolving this issue is taking time to be mindful of eating in advance of eating. Some individuals may need to take digestive enzymes for a period to support the digestive process until the body is actually mindfully eating.

I am an advocate of practicing finding the root cause and healing the body by removing the contributing factors. Always treat the root cause and not just the symptoms, or the issue will still exist and may get worse.
